Do you ever get the feeling that you’ve lived the majority of your life, and yet here you are feeling overwhelmed, unfulfilled, and rather confused? You may be asking, “Who am I?”, “What do I want?”, and possibly, “Why am I unhappy?”
This may sound like a mid-life crisis, but the real reason could be much deeper than you realise. It lies within your unconscious. The “rules” that you have learnt, both directly and indirectly whilst growing up, arise from your environment and experiences.
They often develop for very valid reasons, as ways of staying safe, being accepted, or navigating difficult environments. At one time, they may have served a purpose and we can be thankful for that, but now you can ask yourself, “Do I still need to live by those rules?”
What once protected you can eventually begin to limit you. This is where counselling comes in. I can support you in developing your self-awareness, so you can begin to make meaningful choices and decisions that work best for you now.
At some point in life, many of us realise we’ve been living by rules we never consciously chose. That’s because these rules are now so tiring and feel inauthentic to us:
• Be nice
• Don’t upset anyone
• Keep the peace
• Put others first
• Don’t be “too much”
These messages can become so familiar and our “norm”, that we stop questioning them. They begin to shape how we show up in relationships, at work, and even in how we see ourselves. They appear in our decision-making.
This is often where people-pleasing begins.
On the surface, people-pleasing can look like kindness, reliability and generosity. Whilst those qualities are valuable, constantly putting others before yourself can come at a cost.
You might find it hard to say no. You might feel responsible for other people’s emotions. You might avoid conflict, even when something doesn’t feel right. You might lose sight of what you actually need.
Over time, this can lead to feeling overwhelmed, drained, or even disconnected from who you really are. What are your choices? What do you want?
Yes – What do you want? A question which doesn’t usually get asked often, “What do you want?” This is where change becomes possible, through exploration in a supported therapeutic space.
Breaking these patterns isn’t about suddenly becoming a different person or “getting it right” all the time. It’s about giving yourself permission, to becoming more aware of the roles you’ve been playing and asking yourself whether they still fit. It’s about noticing the moments where you say “yes” but mean “no.” It’s about recognising when you’re shrinking yourself to make others comfortable. It’s about beginning to listen to your own inner voice and truly listening.
With counselling, you can start to write your new rules, the values which are important to you now. This is the beginning of writing a new story today. Not the story that was shaped by expectations, fear, or past experiences, but one that reflects who you are now and who you’re becoming.
In counselling, you get to question the old rules. You get to decide what feels right for you. You get to create boundaries that protect your time, your energy, and your wellbeing.
Gradually, you begin to realise that you don’t have to earn your worth through pleasing others. You are allowed to:
• Say no without guilt
• Express your needs
• Take up space
• Change your mind
• Prioritise yourself
This isn’t about becoming selfish, it’s about becoming authentic. It’s about becoming who you are now.
Change can feel uncomfortable at first. When you begin to do things differently, it can bring up feelings of guilt, fear, or uncertainty, especially if you’re used to putting others first. Discomfort doesn’t mean you’re doing something wrong and can be a sign that something is shifting.
Counselling can support you through this process. It offers a space to explore where these patterns came from, to understand them with compassion, and to begin making choices that feel more aligned with who you are.
In counselling, I can provide a space where you can start using your voice. It’s a space where you can explore boundaries safely, a space where you can begin to step into a version of yourself. One that feels truer, more grounded, and free.
You don’t have to keep living by rules that no longer serve you, when you can rewrite them and create space for a life that feels more like your own.
If this resonates with you, I’m here to support you when you’re ready.
